really meant it. "Shot, bleeding, and still a smartass. I should have known better than to hope a little Demerol would hamper your mouth."
"That's right. You of all people should have known." D.J. struggled up onto her elbows. "If we're going to go, let's go."
"Whoa there, little girl. You're not going anywhere under your own power. Not with big, strong me to carry you."
She smiled a little at their easy return to camaraderie. Danny had begun calling her "little girl" when they'd first metthough at the time, a few years before his big growth spurt, she'd been almost as tall as he. She, in turn, had called him "Danny boy." The nicknames had always been their way of showing an affection D.J. wasn't capable of voicing any other way.
"You're not carrying me anywhere, you he-man. I'm not a complete incompetent. Just lend me your shoulder, good man, and we'll be off." She swung her legs over the side of the table and jumped to the floor.
The floor was closer than it looked, and D.J.'s feet hit the tile with a painful thump. The world shimmered and dipped. The room tilted.
"Oh, oh," she muttered, flinching as the floor loomed toward her face.
Strong arms caught, then lifted her, cradling D.J. against a solid chest. She looked up into McCall's face. "Gotcha," he whispered. She opened her mouth to thank him, but he looked away.
D.J. snapped her mouth shut and frowned. He was hiding something. He'd never avoided her gaze
